The Shad Song (Built You A Pass)

You used to go there so many years ago Back in the day just going against the flow Then things all got weired And you couldn’t go Miles upstream where your instincts take you Gotta get there for life to start anew We got in your way As our progress tends to do But somebody did care Wanted you to get there So they built you a pass So that you could swim free The way that it should be Steps in the water or round stepping stones Some go in shoals and some go it alone And we watch and learn As we watch you grow And somebody did care Wanted you to get there So they built you a pass So that you could swim free The way that it should be Sometimes you gotta follow where you need to go Be one with nature and believe it so I think you’ll find That even in this world where it can seem so bad Somebody will think of even the smallest shad And they can be kind And so you’ll see they care Wanting you to get there So they built you a pass So that you could be where you should be But somebody did care Wanted you to get there So they built you a pass So that you could swim free The way that it should be You used to go there so many years ago Back in the day just going against the flow You can again You can again

about

Inspired by and written for the Unlocking the Severn Project. All proceeds will be donated to the project.

Unlocking the Severn was inspired by one of Britain's rarest fish, the twaite shad, which used to migrate up the River Severn until weirs were built in the mid 19th century blocking their annual migration. The project is building six fish passes at these barriers on the River Severn and River Teme allowing the fish to migrate further upstream as they used to do. This restores 158 miles of river habitat for not only shad, but also other important fish species including salmon and eel.

Unlocking the Severn Project
